Carnage at a wild garlic patch in a beautiful and well-used park… someone’s clear-cut large areas to the ground leaving massive damage and ugly bare patches of earth in an otherwise beautiful public park… I just think it’s so unnecessary to leave such a mess and scars in the colony when you harvest wild food (when it’s avoidable, as it was in this case). Even if the plants themselves suffer no long-term damage (which is the case here, they’ll be fine) I still say you need to consider the location you choose… it’s this sort of thoughtless practice that gives foraging and foragers a bad name, and can potentially cause laws, bans and rules to be introduced which could ruin this freedom and ancient tradition for everyone. Grrrrr! Other friends have seen this happen locally elsewhere before too… is it the same culprit perhaps? Who could possibly use that much in one go anyway for personal consumption? It doesn’t keep that long… so maybe commercial selling, or maybe it’s a restaurant/takeaway, who knows. It wilts so quickly too. Think!! There’s tons of it there, so I’m not worried about people taking what they can reasonably use, even this much, if it’s being used I don’t have a problem with it… for me it’s more about how and where they chose to do it… it’s my opinion that we should consider other people and the users of the area you’re harvesting from when there’s less visible spots available metres away so closeby… it’s just laziness not walking a bit further in…
