Eat your weeds! Introducing a few common, easy-to-identify, nutritious plants you may have growing in your garden or near your home that you could forage & help bolster your vitamin, mineral & plant protein intake at this time when we may not be able to access fresh greens as easily as we’re used to… ??
.
By the way, I wouldn’t normally recommend picking things for consumption this close to a path… I was just using this easy local spot to show you all the plants I wanted to mention growing in close proximity… to actually pick things for eating I’d go off-piste much more than I was doing here. Because dogs etc. Always wash your leaves before use, you can do this in a weak vinegar water if you’re going to eat the leaves raw, up to you ♡
.
There’s also plenty of foraging and plant ID groups on FB so if you’re going to be starting to learn and seek these plants with a view to eating them, please research each species online or in books, check that your plants have all the expected ID points present, and read up about any possible lookalikes, and then maybe ask for a second opinion on the foraging forums with good photos and region/habitat info, it can be really encouraging to get feedback from other foragers after you’ve had a good go at identifying a plant for yourself first… a 15-minute video isn’t long enough to cover everything I usually take 4-5 hours to cover on my courses! ♡
.
If you don’t already have a British wildflower field guide/book (do ask around neighbours & friends too, as many people have one on their shelves somewhere!) then websites such as First Nature are very useful for getting multiple photos and all the ID points to help you positively identify your plant (if you know the names of the ones you’re after)
.
Remember, the golden rule is:
‘If in doubt, leave it out’ ?
.
[Also I said nettles have ‘manganese’ when I totally meant ‘magnesium’ d’oh! Apologies I was still waking up haha! #7am]
.
I’ll do some live video forages soon so keep an eye out… maybe on my lunchtime or early evening wanders ♡ Maybe you can be watching from out in the woods/parks/your garden too and see if you can spot the same plants! We’ll work this out together ♡ hope you can join us!
.
I tend to update my Insta feed more than FB so if you don’t already follow me on there please do have a gander 🙂
